Contraindictions

Breathwork can bring about strong physiological and emotional effects. For your safety, if any of the contraindications listed below apply to you, please schedule a time to discuss them with us. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions before you sign up for a session: info@luminousbreathwork.com.

Each person’s situation is unique and nuanced. We’ll help you navigate the process in collaboration with your care team and support system, ensuring that if you choose to move forward with breathwork, you are well-prepared and fully supported on this powerful journey.

Medical Contraindications

Aneurysms: Prior personal history or multiple first-degree family members affected. Emotional release and physical tension during breathwork could strain arteries in the brain.

Asthma: You're welcome to participate if you have your inhaler on hand—breathwork may intensify symptoms via psychosomatic mechanisms.

Cardiovascular issues or history of heart attack: Intense emotional or physical release may strain the cardiovascular system.

Detached retina: Changes in intraocular pressure during breathwork may worsen this condition.

Epilepsy: Risk of seizure increases with deeper, faster breathing.

Glaucoma: Becomes riskier due to intraocular pressure fluctuations and potential strain.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure: Emotional intensity and movement may substantially raise blood pressure.

History of stroke or seizures: Breathwork can aggravate these neurological conditions.

Osteoporosis: Often acceptable, except in severe cases where physical activity during a session might cause injury.

Pregnancy: Physiological changes like blood alkalinity shifts can potentially affect fetal health. Also, intense experiences may trigger premature uterine contractions.

Anticoagulant or blood-thinning medication (e.g., Coumadin): Risk of uncontrolled internal bleeding from accidental bumps or movement.

Psychiatric Contraindications

Bipolar disorder or schizophrenia (with professional diagnosis): Breathwork may trigger manic or psychotic episodes.

Psychiatric hospitalization or crisis in the past 10 years: Including attempts of self-harm or nervous breakdown. Participation requires prior written approval to ensure emotional readiness.

Severe PTSD: Potential for deep emotional processing or reliving trauma. If under therapeutic care, prior therapist approval is required.

If any of the above apply—or you’re uncertain—please email us at info@luminousbreathwork.com before signing up. We're happy to discuss and determine if breathwork is right for you.
